Bulgarians Join EU Citizens’ Crisis Preparedness Online Debate

A gathering of 150 participants from various EU member states, including four representatives from Bulgaria, convened online from April 24 to 26. This assembly constitutes the second session of the European Citizens’ Panel on Preparedness. The core objective of the discussions is to develop concrete strategies detailing how EU citizens can enhance their readiness for future crises and shocks.

The panel aims to ensure that the actions taken under the EU preparedness union strategy are inclusive and directly responsive to the needs of the citizenry. Participants are delving deeper into priorities previously identified during discussions held in March. Key areas of focus include enhancing citizen engagement, promoting education and solidarity, ensuring inclusion, maintaining the integrity of communication—particularly combating disinformation—and refining overall crisis management protocols across Europe.

The four Bulgarian attendees represent Sofia, Burgas, Isperih, and Reberkovo. During the event, Antoaneta Petkova, representing Reberkovo, noted the ongoing importance of collaborative dialogue. Speaking to BTA, she expressed hope that the group, which includes delegates from Germany, Italy, and Czechia, would continue to debate proposals such as implementing theoretical and practical educational training on crisis response for all age groups.

Petkova also mentioned that several other crucial ideas regarding disaster and crisis response would be addressed. The involvement of these Bulgarian citizens underscores the broad commitment across the EU to bolstering collective preparedness. The panel’s proceedings are designed to translate broad concepts into actionable plans, ensuring that the voices of the citizens guide the continent’s response framework.

The plenary session remains available for live viewing on the panel’s dedicated website.
