At a conference held in Panagyurishte marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Boyko Vassilev asserted that the efforts of three specific journalists were instrumental in the success of the revolt, which ultimately precipitated the Russo-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s liberation. The event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), featured Vassilev, host of the Panorama program on Bulgarian National Television. Vassilev identified Zahari Stoyanov, noting his documentation of both the positive and negative aspects of Bulgaria’s history.
He also highlighted Hristo Botev for publicizing the seizure of the ship Radetzky and the impact of his subsequent death across Europe. Furthermore, he credited Januarius MacGahan with exposing the atrocities within Bulgaria to an international audience. Vassilev emphasized the critical nature of truthful reporting, citing Stoyanov’s writings on the Uprisings.
He detailed a poignant scene where Georgi Benkovski observes the burning of Panagyurishte and the deaths of his allies, yet maintains that his objective has been achieved, illustrating the profound tragedy and moral burden inherent in leadership. Regarding the BTA’s conference series, Vassilev stated that the discussions aim to connect historical events to contemporary Bulgarian life. He warned that deep societal divisions were apparent even during the 50th anniversary of the uprising, suggesting this warning remains relevant today.
He concluded by stating that the April Uprising represents an enduring political element of Bulgaria that continues to shape the nation.
