Iotova to Hold Consultations with Parliamentary Groups Tuesday

President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct consultations with the six parliamentary groups on May 5, according to the President’s press secretariat on Monday. Following these discussions, the Constitution mandates that the President appoint the Prime Minister-designate proposed by the largest parliamentary group to form the government. The schedule for the consultations begins with the largest parliamentary group, Progressive Bulgaria, which commands 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament.

President Iotova will subsequently meet with representatives from GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. After completing the consultations, President Iotova is expected to issue a statement to the media. The parliamentary body was sworn in on April 30, and during that session, Progressive Bulgaria’s Member of Parliament, Mihaela Dotsova, was elected as the National Assembly Chair.

These scheduled consultations represent a key procedural step in the government formation process. The President’s meetings with each faction aim to facilitate the necessary political consensus required for the appointment of a new administration.

  1. It will be interesting to see which group gains the necessary support after the consultations.

  2. What is the specific role of the consultations in determining the Prime Minister-designate?
