Iotova to Hold Consultations with Parliamentary Groups Tuesday

President Iliana Iotova has scheduled a series of high-level consultations with the six major parliamentary groups, commencing on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are a constitutional requirement preceding the formation of a new government. Following these intensive consultations, President Iotova is mandated to appoint the Prime Minister-designate who is nominated by the largest parliamentary faction.

The schedule for the day begins with Progressive Bulgaria, which currently commands the largest bloc with 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament. Subsequently, the President will meet sequentially with the representatives of GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. These structured consultations are designed to facilitate the political process leading to the government’s formation.

After concluding her engagements with all the parliamentary groups, President Iotova is scheduled to address the media to provide a comprehensive statement regarding the outcome of the discussions. This political activity follows the swearing-in of the Members of Parliament on April 30, an event during which Mihaela Dotsova, a member of Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly. The process underscores the formal steps required by the constitution to establish the executive branch following parliamentary elections.
