Iotova to Hold Consultations with Parliamentary Groups Tuesday

President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of high-level consultations with the six major parliamentary groups on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are a constitutional step required before the formation of a new government. Following these discussions, President Iotova is tasked with appointing the Prime Minister-designate, a role assigned to the candidate put forward by the largest parliamentary faction.

The schedule of consultations begins with the largest bloc, Progressive Bulgaria, which commands 131 seats within the 240-seat Parliament. Following this initial meeting, President Iotova will meet sequentially with representatives from GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. Upon the conclusion of the scheduled engagements, the President is expected to issue a formal statement to the media detailing the proceedings and next steps.

This procedural action follows the swearing-in of the Members of Parliament on April 30, during which Mihaela Dotsova, a representative of Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly. The sequence of consultations is therefore central to determining the governmental leadership structure. The process underscores the constitutional mechanism by which the executive branch establishes its mandate following the parliamentary elections.
