That Destroyed Smolyan–Pamporovo Road Section Not Included in Monitoring System Due to Lack of Warning Signs, Official Says

A significant landslide destroyed over 60 meters of the Smolyan–Pamporovo road on Friday afternoon, prompting Smolyan Mayor Nikolay Melemov to declare a state of emergency. During a press conference on Monday, the Chairman of the Management Board of the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA), Todor Anastassov, stated that the incident was not covered by the existing monitoring system due to the absence of prior visible or reported warning signs. The caretaker Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Nikolay Naydenov, presented a new public access system detailing RIA contracts.

According to the data, the specific landslide section on the Smolyan–Pamporovo road was not included in a contract signed on October 23, 2019, between the RIA and “Avtomagistrali,” which was valued at over BGN 569 million. The Minister highlighted that the new information system reveals low implementation rates for landslide stabilization projects across the national road network; out of over 88 documented sites, only three have been completed.
