President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of constitutional consultations with the six parliamentary groups on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are a mandated step in the process of forming a new government. Under the Constitution, following these consultations, President Iotova will be responsible for assigning the role of Prime Minister-designate.
This appointment is to the candidate proposed by the parliamentary group that holds the largest number of seats. The schedule for the consultations begins with Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds 131 seats within the 240-seat Parliament. Following this initial meeting, President Iotova will meet sequentially with the leadership of the GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane parliamentary groups.
After concluding all the scheduled consultations, President Iotova is expected to issue a formal statement to the media detailing the outcome of the proceedings. This diplomatic activity follows the recent swearing-in of Members of Parliament on April 30, during which Mihaela Dotsova of Progressive Bulgaria was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly. The consultations represent a critical phase in the formation of the government, adhering strictly to established parliamentary procedures.
