President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of high-level consultations with the six major parliamentary groups on May 5. According to a statement issued by the President’s press secretariat on Monday, these meetings are a critical constitutional step in the process of forming a new government. Under the established constitutional framework, following these extensive consultations, President Iotova is mandated to appoint the Prime Minister-designate.
This appointment must be based on the proposal put forth by the parliamentary group that holds the largest number of seats. The consultation schedule begins with Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds 131 seats within the 240-member Parliament. Following this initial meeting, President Iotova will proceed to meet sequentially with the leadership of the other five parliamentary factions: GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane.
After completing the series of consultations, President Iotova is expected to issue a formal statement to the media detailing the outcomes of her discussions. The timing of these events follows the swearing-in of the Members of Parliament on April 30, during which Mihaela Dotsova, representing Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly. These procedural steps underscore the political process within the parliamentary system as the nation moves toward governmental formation.
