Minister Gurov Commemorates April Uprising Anniversary

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov addressed the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising on Monday, stating that the question of freedom has shifted from one of capability to one of choice. Gurov reflected that 150 years prior, young revolutionaries rose up to secure the right for all Bulgarians to make their own decisions—a right he noted Bulgarians exercised recently. According to the Prime Minister, freedom is not a singular event but an ongoing requirement.

He emphasized the necessity of remaining vigilant, thinking critically, and speaking out when the defense of freedom is required. In a message paying tribute to the heroes of the April Uprising, the minister underscored this continuous civic responsibility. In addition to his written statement, Gurov shared a video clip on his Facebook page where he recited a letter originally written by the Bulgarian revolutionary and poet Hristo Botev to his colleagues, Ivan Grudov, Ivan Kavaldzhiev, and Georgi Stranski.

The remarks mark a reflection on the historical significance of the April Uprising. The message from Gurov serves as a call for perpetual civic engagement. By framing freedom as an active choice rather than a granted status, the minister linked the historical struggle of the April Uprising to contemporary vigilance among the Bulgarian populace.
