Saxophonist Patrick Bartley and His Quartet Perform in Sofia on International Jazz Day

American saxophonist and composer Patrick Bartley will perform in Sofia with his quartet to celebrate International Jazz Day. The performance is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, at Hall 3 of the National Palace of Culture (NDK), as part of the Salon des Arts at NDK. The event will feature original music from Bartley’s new, unrecorded project, New Visions, which he presents alongside his quartet of American musicians.

Co-organizers of the event include the Festivals in Bulgaria Association, NDK, Jazz FM Radio, and Sofia’s National Academy of Music. Furthermore, the American quartet is slated to conduct a workshop with local Bulgarian jazz talents at the National Academy of Music. Patrick Bartley, born in 1993, began his musical journey playing the clarinet in elementary school before transitioning to the saxophone in high school.

He made his first professional recording at the age of 17. Throughout his career, Bartley has shared stages and collaborated with notable artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Jon Batiste, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. His performance history includes venues like Madison Square Garden and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and television appearances on programs such as “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS.

Bartley has also composed music for a concert series at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, following an invitation from Wynton Marsalis. Critics note that Bartley’s music successfully blends the jazz tradition with contemporary influences from funk, soul, and Japanese pop culture, creating a dynamic experience appealing to both established jazz audiences and new listeners.
