American saxophonist and composer Patrick Bartley will perform in Sofia with his quartet to commemorate International Jazz Day. The performance is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, at Hall 3 of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) as part of the Salon des Arts at NDK. The event will feature original music from Bartley’s new, unrecorded project, New Visions, which he presents with his quartet of American musicians.
Co-organizers of the event include the Festivals in Bulgaria Association, NDK, Jazz FM Radio, and Sofia’s National Academy of Music. Furthermore, the American quartet is slated to conduct a workshop with local Bulgarian jazz talent at the National Academy of Music. Patrick Bartley, born in 1993, initially studied the clarinet before transitioning to the saxophone in high school, making his first professional recording at age 17.
His career has included collaborations with prominent artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Jon Batiste, Carole King, Christian McBride, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Bartley has performed at major venues, including Madison Square Garden and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has appeared on television shows like “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS. His accomplishments include two invitations to the Grammy Recording Academy’s High School Ensemble and reaching the final nomination stage for “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” in 2014.
Bartley has also composed music for a concert series at the Museum of Modern Art in New York at Wynton Marsalis’s request. Critics note that Bartley’s music updates the jazz tradition by incorporating influences from funk, soul, and Japanese pop culture, creating a dynamic experience for both established jazz patrons and new listeners.
