The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, a joint effort by the St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, will commence at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday. This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.
The exhibition showcases over 130 documents, encompassing protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials document the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the April Uprising. Furthermore, the collection provides insight into the international response to the event.
The inclusion of Ottoman documents offers perspectives from both the local and central Ottoman authorities regarding the period. Among the document authors are notable figures from the era, including Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display features both widely recognized and less prominent documents, some of which are being exhibited for the first time.
The materials trace events across all revolutionary districts and detail the role of the Bulgarian emigre community, alongside the international reaction to the uprising. The cultural observance was officially launched in Sofia on April 20, under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture.
