The Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (FAPA) announced on Saturday that President Iliana Iotova will serve as the patron for the upcoming Down Syndrome World Championships. The event is scheduled to take place in Sofia from June 13th to June 19th. The championships are set to gather an expected attendance of over 400 athletes representing more than 40 nations.

Participants will compete across five diverse disciplines: artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, tennis, table tennis, and track and field. The event features several high-profile ambassadors to promote participation and awareness. These ambassadors include Olympic, world, and European champion Karlos Nasar and prominent tennis player Grigor Dimitrov.

Additionally, Olympic silver medalists Krasimir Dunev and Boryana Kaleyn will represent the disciplines of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. FAPA President Slav Petkov stated that the involvement of the head of state, President Iotova, signifies “a strong sign of support for our cause and for all athletes who, through perseverance, talent, and inspiration, demonstrate that sport knows no boundaries.” Petkov emphasized that the Down Syndrome World Championships are crucial steps toward promoting inclusion for diverse athletes and reinforcing the values of equality, respect, and solidarity within the sporting community. The organization anticipates that the gathering will showcase the capabilities of athletes with Down syndrome on an international stage.

The participation of the President underscores the national commitment to supporting adaptive sports and fostering a more inclusive environment through global competition.
