Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, commenced on Tuesday at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje.

The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 historical documents. These materials—including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates—provide comprehensive documentation regarding the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the April Uprising.

The artifacts offer insight into the international response to the revolt, while included Ottoman documents present the viewpoints of both local and central Ottoman authorities. Among the document authors are notable figures from the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The collection showcases both well-known and previously unpublicized records, detailing events across various revolutionary districts and highlighting the involvement of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international reaction to the unrest.

The exhibition was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20. The event is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and is supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. The display serves as a significant cultural resource, preserving and presenting crucial primary sources related to this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
