Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is set to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.

The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The collection features over 130 historical documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials comprehensively illustrate the entire arc of the uprising—from its initial planning and progression through its suppression, to its lasting consequences.

The documents offer diverse viewpoints, detailing the international reaction to the events while also providing insights into the perspectives of both local and central Ottoman authorities via included Ottoman records. Among the documented figures are prominent personalities of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The exhibition presents a mix of well-known and previously unreleased materials, tracing the events across all revolutionary districts and highlighting the crucial role played by the Bulgarian emigre community and the international community.

The cultural significance of the exhibit was underscored by its official opening in Sofia on April 20. The event was held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and received financial support from the Ministry of Culture. The comprehensive nature of the documentation ensures a detailed look into this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
