A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the Bulgarian April Uprising against Ottoman rule is being held today, April 30, at the Museum of History in Panagyurishte. This event forms part of a broader series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster public dialogue regarding this significant historical milestone. The gathering brought together several prominent figures, including BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Sofia University Rector Georgi Valchev, Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev, and local cultural representatives, Atanas Shopov, Director of the local Museum of History, and theatre director Bina Haralampieva.
Journalist Boyko Vasilev, host of the program “Panorama” on Bulgarian National Television, moderated the proceedings. These commemorative conferences are situated within the framework of the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative. This joint effort, spearheaded by BTA, National Television, and National Radio, aims to draw attention to pivotal anniversaries in Bulgarian history that have had demonstrable influence on the broader trajectory of European history.
The forum serves not only as a commemoration of the uprising but also as a platform to examine Bulgaria’s lasting historical contributions to the continent. The discussions underscore the enduring significance of national historical events to regional and European understanding.
