Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has acquired new, high-specification equipment, significantly expanding its capacity for air medical evacuation of critically ill and injured patients. According to the hospital’s press centre, five complete sets of advanced gear were purchased. This new equipment includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, alongside additional items such as defibrillators and suction pumps.

These integrated systems ensure that intensive care and resuscitation readiness can be maintained throughout long-distance transport. With this capability, the MMA can conduct the simultaneous air evacuation of up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment during the flight. The purchased equipment is certified for onboard aircraft use and is ready for immediate installation, facilitating rapid response in emergencies.

The MMA remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized equipment with trained teams dedicated to air medical evacuation. In close coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts requiring the rapid stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the Academy, stated that this equipment substantially enhances the ability to provide care in extreme conditions.

He emphasized that air medical evacuation demands not only advanced technology but also highly trained personnel capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk environments. To maintain operational readiness, the Academy’s medical teams conduct regular training flights simulating various scenarios.
