Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized a substantial quantity of marijuana from a lorry on Friday, according to the Customs Agency. The narcotic substance, valued at approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices, was discovered within a vehicle transporting washing machines. The lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on Thursday.
In the customs control area, the driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation indicating the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria. He declared that there were no other goods to declare. During a comprehensive customs inspection, officers found 25 boxes stacked atop the declared washing machines.
These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy substance. Field drug tests confirmed the presence of marijuana in the packages. Authorities subsequently seized a total of 362 kg of marijuana.
The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have commenced in the case. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is expected to submit a request to the court for the imposition of a detention measure in custody.
