Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized a substantial quantity of narcotics from a commercial lorry on Friday, according to the Customs Agency. The seized material was identified as marijuana, with an estimated judicial value of approximately EUR 3 million. The incident occurred when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the outbound lane of the Lesovo border crossing on Thursday.
The driver, a Turkish national, presented documentation indicating the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and he declared nothing else for customs inspection. During a thorough inspection conducted by customs officials, officers discovered 25 boxes situated atop the declared washing machines. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry green leafy substance.
Field drug tests performed on the contents confirmed the substance to be marijuana. Authorities subsequently seized a total of 362 kg of the narcotic. Following the discovery, the driver was detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case.
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to submit a formal request to the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention for the individual involved. The seizure took place at the Lesovo border crossing while the vehicle was passing through the border checkpoint.
