Customs authorities at the Lesovo border crossing seized a substantial quantity of marijuana from a lorry on Friday, according to the Customs Agency. The narcotic substance, valued at approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices, was discovered during a routine inspection. The incident occurred on Thursday when the vehicle, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania.
The driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation asserting that the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and declared nothing else for customs inspection. During a thorough customs inspection, officers discovered 25 boxes concealed atop the declared washing machines. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry green leafy substance.
Subsequent field drug testing confirmed the substance within the packages to be marijuana. Authorities subsequently seized a total of 362 kg of the illicit material. Following the discovery, the driver was detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated.
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to submit a request to the court seeking the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody. The seizure highlights enforcement efforts at the international border crossing.
