Customs officials at the Lesovo border crossing seized a significant quantity of marijuana from a lorry transporting washing machines, according to the Customs Agency on Friday. The narcotic substance was valued at approximately EUR 3 million based on judicial pricing. The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound route from the country.
During the customs control process, the driver, a Turkish national, presented documentation stating that the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and that nothing else needed to be declared. A thorough customs inspection was subsequently conducted. During this process, officers discovered 25 boxes situated on top of the declared washing machines.
These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy substance. Field drug testing confirmed the substance in the packages to be marijuana. In total, 362 kg of marijuana were seized.
Following the discovery, the driver was detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to submit a request to the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody. The seizure highlights routine enforcement actions taking place at the border crossing.
