Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized nearly 363 kg of marijuana from a lorry transporting washing machines, according to the Customs Agency on Friday. The narcotic substance was estimated to be worth approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices. The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania.

During the customs control process, the Turkish national driver presented documentation indicating the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria. He declared that there were no other items to declare. A comprehensive customs inspection was subsequently conducted.

During this inspection, officers discovered 25 boxes situated atop the declared washing machines within the cargo. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry green leafy material. Field drug tests administered to the substance within these packages tested positive for marijuana.

Authorities seized a total of 362 kg of marijuana. The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have commenced regarding the case. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is expected to file a request with the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody.
