President Iliana Iotova has scheduled a series of meetings with the six established parliamentary groups, commencing on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these formal consultations are a constitutional requirement preceding the formation of a new government. Following these discussions, the President is tasked with appointing the Prime Minister-designate, a role that must be filled by the candidate put forward by the largest parliamentary faction.
The schedule for the consultations begins with Progressive Bulgaria, the leading group holding 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament. President Iotova will subsequently meet with representatives from the remaining groups: GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. The political maneuvering follows the swearing-in of the Members of Parliament on April 30, an event during which Mihaela Dotsova, a member of Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the National Assembly Chair.
After completing her meetings with all the major political blocs, President Iotova is scheduled to address the media to provide an update on the progress made during the formation process. These consultations represent a critical step in the transition to a functioning government structure.
