President Iliana Iotova stated that the Vertical Gas Corridor holds strategic importance for Europe’s energy security. According to her press secretariat, the Corridor’s significance extends beyond economic benefits, holding considerable political weight amid current geopolitical divisions and military conflicts. The discussion concerning this energy infrastructure took place during the Eighth Summit of the European Political Community in Yerevan, attended by leaders from Greece, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, and Romania.
The Vertical Gas Corridor is defined as a strategic initiative designed to enhance energy security and diversify natural gas supplies across Southeastern, Eastern, and Central Europe. During her remarks, the President noted that Bulgartransgaz was among the initiators of the concept and was the first operator to invest in the Corridor’s construction. President Iotova briefed attendees on Bulgaria’s infrastructure plans.
These include planned capacity increases by 2026, such as boosting transmission from Greece to Bulgaria to facilitate greater northbound flows from liquefied natural gas terminals, and increasing capacity from Bulgaria to Romania to secure supply to Eastern and Central Europe. Furthermore, the interconnection point in Stara Zagora is slated for capacity enhancement by 2027. The President emphasized that Bulgaria is establishing itself as a key regional hub for natural gas distribution, facilitating north-south flows and strengthening connections with neighboring nations.
