More Measles Cases Reported, Bringing Total to 165

Six new instances of measles have been reported in Bulgaria, bringing the cumulative total to 165 confirmed cases as of April 23, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent spread indicates activity across several regions, with two new cases identified in Vratsa, two in Lovech, and one each in Pleven and Sofia. Addressing the ongoing public health concern, Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, provided an update on preventative measures.

Tasev confirmed that since early March, 20,000 children have received vaccinations against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). The situation escalated when the Health Ministry confirmed the initial eight cases of measles on March 19, which were first detected in the Vratsa region. In response to the outbreak, Bulgarian authorities mandated an emergency immunization effort targeting all children who had not received the necessary vaccinations.

These continuous efforts underscore the ongoing focus on national health security. The Ministry continues to monitor the incidence of measles to mitigate further transmission. The vaccination drive remains a critical component of the public health strategy aimed at controlling outbreaks and ensuring community immunity.

Authorities are urging continued adherence to vaccination schedules to curb the spread of infectious diseases.
