More Measles Cases Reported, Bringing Total to 165

Six new instances of measles have been reported in Bulgaria, bringing the cumulative total to 165 documented cases as of April 23, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent additions were distributed across several regions: Vratsa reported two new cases, Lovech reported two, and each of Pleven and Sofia each contributed one case. The Ministry of Health provided updates on the ongoing public health response.

On Wednesday, Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate, stated that vaccination efforts have been active since early March, resulting in 20,000 children receiving the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The initial outbreak was noted when the Health Ministry confirmed the first eight measles cases on March 19, all located in the Vratsa region. In response to the spread, authorities immediately implemented measures, including ordering emergency immunization for all children who were identified as unvaccinated.

These continuous reports underscore the ongoing vigilance required to manage communicable diseases within the national health system. Public health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to control the spread of measles and mitigate further cases across the country.
