Review: April 30

As the National Assembly convened for its inaugural session, political discourse focused heavily on immediate priorities and the necessary institutional reforms. Officials and analysts highlighted the urgent tasks facing the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs). Vladimir Nikolov of Progressive Bulgaria stated the need to restore public trust, noting that the party aimed to address the low 8% public approval rating for the institution.

Meanwhile, Change leader Assen Vassilev identified the prompt election of the Supreme Judicial Council and the adoption of comprehensive economic packages to tackle inflation as primary goals. The composition of the parliament shows significant shifts, with over half of the MPs being first-time representatives, largely from Progressive Bulgaria. Experts offered a cautious review of the political landscape.

Media analyst Georgi Lozanov suggested that the elections indicated voter impatience, allowing Rumen Radev a chance to initiate a new political chapter. However, he cautioned that this could lead either to a recurrence of established power models or toward authoritarian governance. Lozanov emphasized the need for swift judicial reform and clarity on whether Parliament will assert its constitutional authority or if executive power will dominate.

Concerns were also raised regarding the potential for internal fragmentation within large political blocs, as noted by social psychologist Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Dimitrov.

He warned that overly high expectations from any single force could lead to public disillusionment if campaign promises are not met. Further complicating the proceedings, the decision by Change to form a separate parliamentary group from Democratic Bulgaria resulted in six distinct groups, rather than the anticipated five. These developments underscore the complex path forward for the national government and the critical need for the assembly to establish clear governance parameters.
