To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Sofia Municipality hosted “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical educational game for local students. The event took place in Boris Garden Park, following a route through the Prominent Bulgarians alley. The initiative engaged teams of students in an immersive journey designed to connect them with Bulgaria’s national history.
Participants followed designated paths that linked key monuments dedicated to national heroes, including revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. To deepen their understanding, the students were required to answer questions related to the period, which allowed them to collect pieces forming a symbolic map of the uprising. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event serves to honor a significant act of courage 150 years ago, encouraging students to engage with history beyond the traditional classroom setting.
The game concept was developed by history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of a cultural program implemented through a partnership between Sofia Municipality and the Sofia Regional Education Directorate. Upon completing the historical circuit, each team concluded their participation by composing a short message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the historical lessons they had learned. The event successfully provided the students with a tangible experience tracing the footsteps of past heroes.
