The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors in Bulgaria on Friday of being used to target officials involved in institutional reform. This statement followed claims made by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who stated he was facing pressure and being smeared through false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model,” naming GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski.
Mirchev argued that this model remains active, with the prosecution being used once again to target reform advocates. These comments followed Kandev’s earlier Facebook video, where he reported being pressured and warned to “go home,” citing multiple calls from unknown numbers alleging false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Kandev maintained that the objective was to force his resignation.
Mirchev contended that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov—officials who guaranteed fair elections—constitutes retaliation. The party stated that the prosecution and the Peevski-Borissov model are attempting to retaliate against those working toward reform. Furthermore, Mirchev announced that the party had alerted the prosecution service regarding a journalistic investigation by BIRD.
This investigation alleged recordings of conversations involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary concerning bribes paid for court decisions. Mirchev demanded an immediate investigation, while party co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov called for thorough reviews of senior magistrates’ assets, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov. Yes, Bulgaria also plans to request a parliamentary hearing concerning whether Delyan Peevski has been using private jets for travel without declaring the expenses.
