At the closing event of DisInfoHack 2026, held at the GATE Institute of the Sofia University on Monday, the institution’s rector, Prof. Georgi Valchev, emphasized the necessity for young people to cultivate robust critical thinking skills. He stated that these abilities are crucial for discerning authentic information from misleading content in the current digital landscape.
According to the rector, events like DisInfoHack are vital platforms for bridging the gap between established facts and deliberate manipulation. Valchev stressed that the youth must be prepared to meet the challenges of the modern era by actively contributing to the development of a sustainable information environment. He further cautioned that even seemingly reliable information can occasionally be co-opted for disinformation purposes.
DisInfoHack itself is part of a larger initiative known as the Countering Disinformation Environment (Ecosystem) in Bulgaria (CoDE). This project is designed to strengthen information resilience through a scientific framework. The undertaking involves a collaborative effort by the university, specifically through the GATE Institute, the European Studies Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.
These departments are working in partnership with the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the European Software Institute. The overall effort underscores the academic commitment to media literacy and the rigorous study of information integrity within the Bulgarian higher education sector.
