University Rector Highlights Critical Thinking at DisInfoHack 2026

At the opening ceremony for the final event of DisInfoHack 2026, held at the GATE Institute of Sofia University, the institution’s rector, Prof. Georgi Valchev, addressed the importance of media literacy among young people. Valchev stressed that developing robust critical thinking skills is essential for enabling individuals to differentiate genuine information from misleading content.

He stated that initiatives such as DisInfoHack play a vital role in narrowing the divide between verifiable facts and manipulative narratives within the contemporary information landscape. According to the rector, the youth must be prepared to meet the challenges of the modern era and take an active part in cultivating a sustainable information environment. He cautioned that even seemingly reliable sources can occasionally be co-opted or utilized as forms of disinformation.

DisInfoHack itself is structured as an initiative supporting the three-year project, Countering Disinformation Environment (Ecosystem) in Bulgaria (CoDE). This project aims to bolster information resilience through rigorous scientific methodologies. The implementation involves Sofia University through its GATE Institute, the European Studies Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.

These efforts are conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the European Software Institute.
