The caretaker Minister of Innovation and Growth, Irena Mladenova, stated that combating disinformation requires a coordinated effort involving the technology sector, the scientific community, and the state. Speaking at the concluding event of DisInfoHack 2026 at the GATE Institute at Sofia University on Monday, Mladenova emphasized that these stakeholders must work together to enable society to make informed decisions and reduce vulnerability to external influences with unclear objectives. Mladenova highlighted that initiatives like DisInfoHack are valuable not only for their immediate outcomes but also for the sustained effort invested in them.
She noted that the program establishes a foundation for developing practical solutions and tangible results in the fight against disinformation. According to the Minister, the structure of DisInfoHack, which involves mentorship and an extended process of idea development, helps build sustainable skills. She expressed hope that participants have enhanced their ability to discern reliable information within the current information flow.
A primary goal of the initiative, Mladenova added, is to build a network and broaden the dissemination of acquired knowledge. She urged participants to share their learnings with peers and friends to amplify the project’s impact. DisInfoHack is part of a broader three-year project in Bulgaria called Countering Disinformation Environment (Ecosystem) in Bulgaria (CoDE).
This effort aims to develop information resilience through a scientific approach by studying and analyzing Bulgaria’s information environment, ultimately summarizing best practices and tools for effective counteraction to disinformation.
