A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy, measuring approximately three metres in height, is currently being constructed in Plovdiv for the third stage of the cycling event. According to Kiril Velchev, Executive Director of the Plovdiv 2019 Foundation, the steel installation will be situated at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Blvd near the Water Palace, directly along the race route. The replica is being crafted by the artists Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.
The pair noted that replicating the trophy presented a significant challenge due to its highly complex and distinctive shape. Known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), its design features a spiral ribbon motif that rises upward, narrowing in the middle, resembling an hourglass. The artists selected stainless steel for the installation to ensure longevity against weather and time.
This material allows for the recreation of the polished interior effect found in the original cup, while a delicate shiny edge has been reproduced on the exterior. Once finished, the entire structure will be toned to match the original bronze color. The total height of the installation is 4.5 metres and includes a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo.
The structure is estimated to weigh about 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base to illuminate the trophy at night. Separately, BTA has launched a dedicated section for the Giro d’Italia 2026, covering the three stages scheduled to pass through Bulgaria from May 8 to May 10, 2026.
