Of Skopje’s Universal Hall to Be Completed by End of 2027

The reconstruction of the Universal Hall in Skopje, which sustained damage in a fire in 2024, is slated for completion by the end of 2027. This timeline was announced by Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Culture and Tourism Minister Zoran Ljutkov, and Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski during a site visit on Monday, emphasizing the hall’s necessity for the European Capital of Culture – Skopje 2028 initiative. Minister Ljutkov stated that the State is funding the investment, with approximately EUR 20 million secured through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

While the hall will retain its original aesthetic, the reconstruction plans include the integration of modern materials and enhanced sound insulation, particularly due to its proximity to residential areas. The Universal Hall, which is modeled after a former circus building in Sofia and was a donation following the 1963 earthquake, has a complex history of stalled renovations. Initial renovation efforts began in 2021 but were subsequently suspended due to safety concerns and subsequent administrative changes.

Following the government’s assumption of responsibility in September 2023, the project was further managed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism after the fire in April 2024 left only the metal framework intact. The renewed focus on the facility underscores its importance to the city’s cultural landscape. The successful completion of this major piece of culture infrastructure is critical for Skopje as it prepares to host the 2028 designation.

The effort aims to restore this significant universal venue, positioning it as a centerpiece for future cultural events.
