Writers, Translators to Present Bulgaria at Thessaloniki Book Fair

Contemporary Bulgarian writers will represent Bulgaria at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Book Fair, where the nation is the guest of honour, organizers announced on Monday. The fair, themed “Generation of Readers / Book Generators,” will run from May 7 to 10. This event is a leading literary forum in Southeastern Europe, attracting authors, publishers, and book industry representatives from numerous countries.

In an official statement, caretaker Culture Minister Nayden Todorov characterized Bulgaria’s participation as a significant opportunity to showcase the breadth and diversity of contemporary Bulgarian literature to Greek and international audiences. He noted that Bulgarian literature has enhanced its global presence recently, evidenced by increased translations, publications in various languages, and awards received by both authors and translators. The Minister also highlighted the role of translators as “cultural ambassadors” connecting national literatures.

Organizers view Bulgaria’s involvement in the Thessaloniki fair as part of deepening cultural ties between Bulgaria and Greece. The program features established Bulgarian authors such as Teodora Dimova and Elena Aleksieva, alongside translators and literary sector representatives. Bulgarian literature has seen international success, notably Georgi Gospodinov’s 2023 International Booker Prize win, and Rene Karabash’s novel being shortlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize.

According to organizers, the Bulgarian literary landscape is dynamic, supported by over 200 publishing houses, hundreds of new book titles annually, and with over 60% of Bulgarians reporting reading at least one book in the past year. The program at the fair includes presentations on the Bulgarian book market, discussions on international cooperation, author meetings, and educational initiatives for children.
