The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, opens on Tuesday at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The comprehensive exhibition features over 130 historical documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials meticulously document the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the uprising.
Furthermore, the collection provides insight into the international reaction to the conflict. Notably, the inclusion of Ottoman documents offers a perspective from both the local and central Ottoman authorities regarding the period. Among the authors documented are prominent figures of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov.
The display presents a mix of well-known and previously lesser-seen documents, charting events across all revolutionary districts and detailing the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international response. This significant cultural undertaking was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20. The exhibition is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture.
The collection serves as a vital resource for understanding the depth and breadth of the revolutionary period in Bulgarian history.
