Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), asserted that only strong and independent journalism can ensure accountability for those in power regarding their decisions. Speaking at the opening session of the regulator’s first meeting of her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to maintain professional ethical standards and zealously protect the dignity of their profession. She acknowledged the trust placed in the regulator’s members, noting that each member’s experience offers a valuable contribution to the Council’s work.
Naplatanova stated that the CEM intends to remain open to society, journalistic organizations, the media industry, and academia, and will actively encourage initiatives designed to improve the quality of media content. The Chair clarified that the regulator’s role is primarily supportive, emphasizing that the main responsibility for the state of the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals. She cautioned that mere declarations are insufficient to safeguard freedom of speech and journalistic independence.
Naplatanova underlined that only strong and independent media can foster critical thinking and enable society to make informed decisions about its future. While pointing out that the members’ roles within the regulator are temporary, she stressed that efforts to protect the media environment must be continuous. Naplatanova was elected Chair on April 23, and her term commenced on April 28, running until April 27, 2027.
