Regulator Head: Only Strong, Independent Journalism Can Hold Power Accountable

Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), asserted that only strong and independent journalism possesses the capacity to hold governing bodies accountable for their decisions. Addressing the opening meeting of the regulator during her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to uphold rigorous professional ethical standards and protect the dignity of their field. During her address, Naplatanova thanked the council members for their trust, emphasizing the value of each member’s experience to the CEM’s operations.

She outlined the CEM’s future direction, stating the body will remain accessible to the public, journalistic organizations, the media industry, and academia, with plans to promote initiatives that improve media content quality. Naplatanova clarified that the regulator’s function is fundamentally supportive. She stressed that the primary responsibility for the health of the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals.

According to her, mere declarations or statements are insufficient measures to guarantee freedom of speech or journalistic autonomy. She underlined that only strong and independent media can effectively aid society in developing critical thinking skills necessary for making informed decisions about its future. While acknowledging the temporary nature of the regulator’s membership, Naplatanova stressed that efforts to safeguard the media environment must be continuous.

Her tenure began on April 28 of this year and is set to conclude on April 27, 2027.
