Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), asserted that only strong and independent journalism can ensure that those in power are held accountable for their decisions. Speaking at the opening session of the regulator during her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to uphold rigorous professional ethical standards and protect the dignity of their profession. During her address, Naplatanova thanked the council members for their trust, emphasizing that the diverse experience of each member contributes significantly to the CEM’s work.
She outlined that the CEM intends to remain accessible to society, journalistic organizations, the media industry, and academia, and will actively promote initiatives designed to enhance the overall quality of media content. The Chair clarified that the regulator’s function is fundamentally supportive, stressing that the primary responsibility for the health of the media environment belongs to journalists and creative professionals. She noted that mere declarations or statements are insufficient to safeguard freedom of speech or journalistic autonomy.
According to Naplatanova, it is only through strong, independent media that society can develop critical thinking skills necessary for making informed decisions about its future. While the members’ roles within the regulator are temporary, she stressed that efforts to protect the media environment must be continuous. Naplatanova was elected Chair on April 23, with her term set to run until April 27, 2027.
