Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), emphasized that robust journalism is vital for democratic accountability. Speaking at the opening meeting of the regulator during her second term, Naplatanova stated that only strong and independent journalism possesses the capacity to hold governing bodies accountable for their decisions. She called upon journalists to uphold rigorous professional ethical standards and zealously protect the dignity of their profession.
Naplatanova expressed gratitude to the CEM members for their confidence, noting that the experience of each council member is a valuable contribution to the organization’s work. She outlined the CEM’s future intentions, stating that the body will remain open to society, academic institutions, and the broader media industry to encourage initiatives aimed at improving content quality. However, she clarified that the regulator’s function is primarily supportive.
Naplatanova stressed that the ultimate responsibility for the state of the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals. She cautioned that mere declarations or statements are insufficient safeguards for freedom of speech or journalistic autonomy. She underscored that only strong, independent media can effectively foster critical thinking and enable society to make informed decisions about its future trajectory.
While acknowledging the temporary nature of the regulator’s members’ roles, she stressed that efforts to protect the media landscape must be continuous. Naplatanova began her current term on April 28, serving until April 27, 2027.
