Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has significantly upgraded its capabilities for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification medical equipment. According to the hospital’s press center, five complete sets of advanced gear were purchased. This inventory includes essential items such as vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, alongside supplementary devices like defibrillators and suction pumps.

This new equipment ensures that intensive care and resuscitation readiness can be maintained even during extended, long-distance patient transports. With these additions, the MMA is now equipped to conduct simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment en route. The machinery is certified for use onboard aircraft and can be installed immediately, ensuring a rapid response capability during emergencies.

The MMA remains the only institution in Bulgaria that combines specialized medical equipment with trained personnel for comprehensive air medical evacuation services. In collaboration with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are prepared to respond to large-scale incidents, including mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts, requiring the rapid stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. Prof.

Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, noted that this equipment greatly enhances the ability to provide care in extreme conditions. He emphasized that effective air medical evacuation relies equally on advanced technology and highly trained teams capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk environments. To maintain operational readiness, the medical teams conduct regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios.
