President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of constitutional consultations with the nation’s parliamentary groups on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are a key step in the process of forming a new government. Under the provisions of the Constitution, following these consultations, President Iotova will appoint the Prime Minister-designate.
This individual must be put forward by the parliamentary group that commands the largest number of seats in the National Assembly. The consultation schedule begins with Progressive Bulgaria, which holds the largest representation with 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament. Subsequently, President Iotova will meet sequentially with the leaders of the GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane parliamentary groups.
These structured consultations are vital to the political process, providing the constitutional framework for the selection of the executive leadership. Following the conclusion of the meetings with all six parliamentary factions, President Iotova has stated her intention to address the media with a comprehensive statement regarding the proceedings. The political calendar has recently been active, as Members of Parliament were sworn into office on April 30.
During this session, Mihaela Dotsova, representing Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly. The upcoming meetings mark a critical juncture in the formation of the government, guided by the constitutional procedures involving the President and the major parliamentary blocs.
