An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday in front of the National Palace of Culture, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The presentation was jointly organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by officials, including caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, alongside prominent Bulgarian cyclists and photographers.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown for the first time. The collection serves to commemorate significant events and notable figures that have placed the Bulgarian capital in the annals of cycling history. Among the photographic highlights is imagery featuring Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the sole Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s leading rider over the past fifteen years.
Furthermore, the display includes historical photographs documenting Bulgaria’s significant Olympic achievement in the sport, specifically the sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race during the 1980 Moscow Games. The event provides a visual retrospective on the deep connection between the city of Sofia and the sport of cycling. By showcasing these historical and contemporary images, the exhibition pays tribute to the dedication of Bulgarian athletes and the enduring legacy of the sport within the city.
