An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday in front of the National Palace of Culture, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was jointly presented by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, prominent Bulgarian cyclists, and photographers, alongside representatives from the municipality.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown for the first time. These images serve to commemorate significant events and notable personalities that have contributed to the history of cycling in the Bulgarian capital. Among the photographic highlights is work by Nikolay Mihaylov, who is recognized as Bulgaria’s only participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years.
Furthermore, the exhibition provides visual documentation of Bulgaria’s major Olympic success in the sport, specifically recalling the sixth-place finish achieved in the 100 km team road race during the 1980 Moscow Games. The display aims to celebrate the deep connection between the city of Sofia and the sport of cycling, showcasing moments that have shaped the local sporting narrative. The event underscores the cultural and historical significance of the sport within the modern context of Sofia.
