‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) announced jointly on Monday that they will table a no-confidence motion targeting the Government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This development follows the resignation of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s cabinet on April 23. In a press release, the PSD stated that the ministerial departures formalize the party’s decision to withdraw political support from Prime Minister Bolojan, asserting that he consequently lacks the parliamentary majority and democratic mandate to lead the government.

A PSD representative invited colleagues who support the initiative to vote on the measure. Meanwhile, AUR clarified that its cooperation with the PSD is limited solely to the no-confidence proposal, noting that the two parties have no broader agreements. AUR stated its primary political objective is to trigger early elections, arguing that the current administration is incapable of managing the nation’s economy.

Prime Minister Bolojan, however, indicated he would not resign, maintaining his mandate and stating that he is actively working toward establishing a minority government. Amid this political maneuvering, President Nicusor Dan held discussions with leaders of the ruling coalition between April 20 and 26. The President confirmed that the government had excluded cooperation with anti-Western elements, specifically AUR.

Discussions during the President’s subsequent consultation focused on crucial initiatives, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE.
