The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have jointly announced plans to table a no-confidence motion against the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This move was declared in a joint statement on Monday. The impetus for the action stems from the resignations of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s cabinet on April 23.
In a press release, the PSD stated that these resignations formalized the party’s withdrawal of political support from Mr. Bolojan, asserting that he consequently lacked the necessary parliamentary majority to maintain his position. While the PSD invited its members to support the initiative, AUR’s Petrisor Peiu clarified that the opposition’s cooperation is limited solely to the no-confidence proposal.
Peiu stated that AUR’s primary objective is to trigger early elections, citing the current government’s inability to manage the economy. Bolojan, in response to the escalating political crisis, affirmed that he would not resign and intends to continue fulfilling his mandate while working to form a minority government. Amid this internal political instability, President Nicusor Dan conducted talks with leaders from the ruling coalition during the week of April 20–26.
President Dan confirmed that the discussions excluded any governing arrangement involving anti-Western elements, particularly the AUR. He expressed readiness for cooperation on critical national projects, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE. These key programs remain the focus of ongoing consultations hosted by the President with all governing coalition parties.
