The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have jointly announced their intention to table a no-confidence motion against the Government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This move was communicated via a joint statement on Monday. The development follows the resignation of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s administration on April 23.
In a press release, the PSD stated that these resignations formalized the party’s decision to withdraw its political backing. The statement asserted that Bolojan no longer held the support of the parliamentary majority, thereby diminishing his democratic legitimacy to lead the government. Marian Neacsu of the PSD encouraged colleagues who support the measure to vote accordingly.
Meanwhile, Petrisor Peiu of the AUR clarified that their cooperation with the PSD is limited solely to the no-confidence proposal. Peiu stated that AUR’s primary objective is to instigate early elections, arguing that the current administration is incapable of managing the national economy. Despite the challenge, Bolojan indicated he would not resign, asserting his commitment to fulfilling his mandate while working on establishing a minority government.
Amid the political dispute, President Nicusor Dan recently held consultations with leaders from the ruling coalition. The President confirmed that the discussions excluded anti-Western political forces, specifically mentioning AUR. He expressed readiness for cooperation on key initiatives, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE.
These major programs remain central to the ongoing consultations hosted by the President.
