‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have announced a joint effort to table a no-confidence motion against the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The announcement was made via a joint statement on Monday. This move follows the resignation of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s cabinet on April 23.

In a press release, the PSD stated that these resignations formalized the party’s decision to withdraw its political support. The party asserted that Bolojan no longer possessed the parliamentary majority necessary to maintain the leadership of the Romanian government. While the PSD invited colleagues to support the initiative, AUR representatives clarified that their cooperation was limited solely to the no-confidence proposal.

AUR stated its political objective is to prompt early elections, arguing that the current government lacks the capability to manage the nation’s economy. Prime Minister Bolojan, meanwhile, rejected calls for his resignation, affirming his commitment to his mandate while working on the formation of a minority government. Amid the political instability, President Nicusor Dan conducted discussions with leaders from the ruling coalition during the week of April 20–26.

The President confirmed that the ruling bloc had ruled out governing with anti-Western elements, specifically mentioning AUR. Discussions centered on key cooperative initiatives, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE. These ongoing consultations remain central to the political dialogue involving the governing coalition parties.

  1. This alliance between the PSD and AUR appears purely strategic rather than ideologically consistent.
