Students from Sofia schools recently participated in a historical educational activity titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes.” Organized by the Sofia Municipality, the event took place in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The initiative guided participating students along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where they worked in teams to engage with national history. The activity required the students to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes and answer questions pertaining to Bulgarian history.
Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, noted that the event serves to motivate students by allowing them to experience history beyond traditional classroom settings. Throughout the structured walk, teams followed routes connecting significant figures, including revolutionaries Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. As they progressed, participants answered questions to collect pieces forming a symbolic map of the uprising.
Upon concluding the historical journey, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by their learning experience. This educational game concept was developed with the collaboration of history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The event successfully provided the students with an interactive way to connect with the legacy of Bulgaria’s historical heroes.
