Students from Sofia participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event was held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The initiative focused on the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where teams of students engaged in an educational activity designed to connect them with Bulgarian history.
The competition required the students to search for monuments dedicated to national heroes and answer questions pertaining to the nation’s past. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event aims to mark the 150-year anniversary of a significant act of courage, encouraging students to engage with history outside the traditional classroom setting. Participants followed curated routes that linked key monuments to revolutionary figures, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.
As they progressed, the teams answered questions to collect pieces forming a symbolic map of the uprising. Upon completing the walk, every team composed a short message to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on their learning experience. The game concept was developed with the input of history teacher Emil Jassim and forms part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, implemented in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.
The activity successfully merged historical commemoration with interactive learning, ensuring that the memory of the heroes remains an active part of the community’s educational outreach.
